Barrwg Cottage Access Statement

Comments and suggestions for information to include in our access statement are welcome.

Approach

  • Upper Grippath Holiday Cottages is situated within the North West of the City of Newport, 5 miles from the M4.
  • Upper Grippath Hoilday Cottages is located in Risca, near Newport.
  • Upper Grippath Holiday Cottages has easy access to M4.
  • The roads leading up to the Upper Grippath Holiday Cottages are

    winding and uneven in places.

  • The private road leading into Upper Grippath Holiday Cottages is a

    narrow country lane 1 mile in length.

  • There is a sign available at the front of the property, which is apparent

    from the road.

    Parking

    • There is a concrete sloped apron and access ramp.
    • From the sloped access, there is a double wooden gate (can be

      opened prior to arrival with advanced notice), that leads into the flat

      block paved court yard.

    • The court yard then leads up another concrete ramp, to cottage

      entrance.

    • There is a parking space available at the left hand side of the property,

      situated on a level concrete path, which has a short walking distance to the main entrance.

      Approach to Main Entrance

      • From the parking area, there is a concrete path leading up to the main entrance door.
      • There are no handrails/grab rails available.
      • External lighting is available above the main entrance door this

        operates on a sensor.

        Main Entrance

• The main entrance door has a clear opening of 910mm wide.

  • A grab rail is fitted to door frame on the RHS of door.
  • The handle is a lever action and set at 1000mm high, with a good

    colour contrast.

  • There is a threshold over the door set at 30mm high.
  • There is a full-glass panel door care should be taken, particularly by

    those with visual impairments.

  • The door has a legend to assist with identification.
  • The main entrance door leads onto the kitchen, which is level

    throughout.

  • There is an unfixed anti-slip mat located on the internal of the door.

    Kitchen

    • Entrance into the kitchen is via the main entrance door.
    • Flooring consists of non-slip tiles unless wet.
    • Storage is available in a range of heights.
    • Cupboard handles are D type handles of a style for good grip and

      contrast.

    • Cupboard handles are good in terms of colour contrast.
    • Worktops are set at 900mm high.
    • The sink tap have twist action mixer taps.
    • The oven is built in with drop down doors set at a high height.
    • There is a cordless kettle available.
    • A microwave is available at worktop height.
    • Lighting is good.
    • The rear patio light switch is set at worktop height, with a good colour

      contrasting tactile dot on the switch.

    • Colour contrasting in the kitchen is reasonable.
    • Chairs with firm back support and arms are available.
    • Fire fighting equipment is set at worktop height and at ground level by

      main entrance door.

    • Manoeuvrability is good.

      Dining Area/Lounge

    • From the kitchen, you will come to an archway measuring 910mm wide, which leads into the dining room/lounge.
    • Colour contrasting in the room is reasonable.
    • Flooring is level throughout and consists of tiles, carpet and one

      unfixed rug. Can be removed if required.

    • Lighting is good with additional ceiling and wall lights.
    • Light switches are set at 880mm high, with good colour contrast.
    • Additional sockets are available set at 520mm high, with a good colour

      contrasting tactile dot on the switches.

    • Chairs with firm back support and arms are available.
    • Dining table legs are corner positioned.
    • Table height adjusters are available.
    • There is a futon bed available within the lounge if required.
  • The TV is remote control operated and has teletext/subtitle facilities.
  • A CD player is available, it is remote control operated.
  • Manoeuvrability is reasonable and all furniture is unfixed and

    removable if required.

    Accessible Bedroom – Twin Single Room

    • The accessible bedroom has a level access from the dining room/lounge.
    • The sliding door has a clear opening of 790mm wide.
    • The handle on both sides of the door is a bar set at 1030mm

      (outer)/910mm (internally) high.

    • The door handle has a good colour contrast.
    • Colour contrasting in the room is good.
    • Flooring is level throughout and consists of wood laminate.
    • Lighting is good and pull cord operated.
    • Two additional bedside lamps are available (switches not ideal).
    • There is an emergency alarm and is pull cord operated (red pull cord,

      with a good toggle).

    • Light switch is set at 890mm high, with good colour contrast.
    • Additional sockets are available set at 430mm high, with good colour

      contrast.

    • The twin single beds are 520mm high.
    • A single bed can be removed with prior notice to accommodate

      wheelchair users or hoist equipment.

    • Storage is available at a range of heights.
    • Furniture handles are good in terms of colour contrasting and style for

      grip.

    • A large mirror is provided.
    • Manoeuvrability is good (with extra single bed manoeuvrability is

      limited).

      Accessible Bathroom

      • The accessible bathroom has a level access from the dining room/lounge.
      • The sliding door has a clear opening of 800mm wide.
      • The handle is a bar set at 1020mm high, with a chunky twist lock set at

        820mm high.

      • The handle has a good colour contrast and the there is a good colour

        contrasting tactile dot on the lock.

      • Flooring is level throughout and consists of tiles.
      • Flooring is non-slip unless wet.
      • Colour contrasting between the suite and walls is reasonable.
      • Lighting is good and pull cord operated set at 520mm high.
      • The toggle is reasonable, with colour contrast.
  • The toilet is 410mm high and has a lever action flush, with good colour contrast.
  • The toilet has a drop down grab rail available.
  • The toilet roll holder and bin are situated in reach of the toilet.
  • The rim of this bath is 490mm high with lever action taps.
  • The shower head is available for hand held use over the bath, and the

    controls are incorporated into the bath taps.

  • Anti-slip bath mats are available.
  • A removable bath seat is available on request with prior notice.
  • The hand basin is 840mm high and consists of a floating basin, with

    lever action taps.

  • A large mirror is available over the hand basin.
  • Shaving socket is set at 850mm high, with a good colour contrast on

    the switch.

  • There is an emergency alarm and is pull cord operated (red pull cord,

    with a good toggle).

  • The bathroom has grab rails available by the hand basin and within the

    bath/shower facilities.

  • There are contrasting strips running along the grab rails.
  • There is sufficient amount of space for a left and right transfer to the

    toilet.

    Stairs

  • A carpet staircase provides access up to the bedroom and bathroom.
  • Steps consist of fixed carpet and there is a wooden handrail situated

    on the left hand side (ascending). The handrail contrasts well to its

    background.

  • There are 12 steps in total leading up to the first floor bedroom and

    bathroom.

  • Steps range from 820mm wide, 250mm deep and 210mm high and are

    consistent throughout the flight.

  • Step nosing is not highlighted.
  • Lighting is good.
  • Clothes hooks (located on the right hand side immediately before the

    stairs) is set at 1730mm, with a good colour contrast.

    First Floor Bedroom – Twin Singe Room

    • The door has a clear opening of 670mm wide.
    • The door has a thumb latch handle set at 1420mm high, with good

      colour contrast.

    • Colour contrasting in the room is good.
    • Flooring is level throughout and consists of carpet.
    • Lighting is good with additional bedside lamps (switches not ideal).
    • Light switches are set at 1450mm high, with good colour contrast.
    • Additional sockets are available set at 340mm high, with good colour

      contrast.

  • The twin single beds are 560mm high (the twin single bed can be turned into a double bed if required with prior notice).
  • Storage is available at a range of heights.
  • Furniture handles are poor in terms of colour contrasting and style for

    grip.

  • A large mirror is provided.
  • A hairdryer is provided.
  • There is an emergency alarm monitor point within the bedroom.
  • Manoeuvrability is reasonable.

    First Floor Bathroom

    • The door swings inwards with a clear opening of 670mm wide.
    • The door has a thumb latch handle set at 1420mm high, with good

      colour contrast.

    • The door has a hook lock set at 1020mm high, with a good colour

      contrast.

    • Colour contrasting between the suite and walls is limited; the room is

      predominantly light in colour.

    • Flooring is non-slip unless wet and consists of tiles.
    • Lighting is good and pull cord operated set at 1340 high. Colour

      contrasting on the toggle is good .

    • The toilet is 410mm high and has a lever action flush, with a slight

      colour contrast.

    • The toilet roll holder and bin are situated in reach of the toilet.
    • Bathmats are available, with a good colour contrast.
    • The shower head is available for hand held use, with twist controls set

      at 1770mm high.

    • The shower tray is approximately 330mm high.
    • There is a built in anti-slip shower mat.
    • The hand basin consists of a basin and pedestal set at 810mm, with

      twist action taps.

    • A large mirror is provided over the hand basin.
    • The shaving socket is set at a high height over the hand basin, with no

      colour contrast.

    • There are no grab rails in this bathroom.
    • Manoeuvrability is limited.

      The laundry room has a short walking distance from the Barrwg Cottage. The laundry room is situated on an uneven gravel surface, which is on a slight incline.

      Laundry

      • The main entrance door has one step up measuring 260mm high, with a 20mm lip.
      • The door has a clear opening of 870mm wide.
  • The handle is a lever action set at 1220mm high, with a poor colour contrast.
  • There is an upper glass panel door.
  • Lighting is good.
  • Light switches are set at 1460mm high, with colour contrast.
  • Manoeuvrability is limited.
  • Operating instructions are available.
  • There is an unfixed anti-slip mat located on the internal of the door.
  • There are no handrails/grab rails available.
  • Laundry can be done on your behalf if required.

    The laundry room also has spa room, with a level entry door measuring approximately 870mm wide. The main entrance into the sauna measures 560mm wide, once inside manoeuvrability is limited.

    Outdoor / Play Area

  • The outdoor floor surface consists of gravel and concrete.
  • The outdoor area is situated within 40 acres of land, with plenty of

    fields for assistance dogs to be exercised.

  • Outdoor furniture includes chairs with firm back support and arms.
  • Picnic facilities are available.
  • Barbeque is available
  • External lighting is on sensors.
  • Garden maintenance is good.
  • A play area is available set on grass, which is on an incline.
  • There is a range of play equipment available.
  • Colour contrasting on the play equipment is good.

    Other Information

  • Assistance dogs are welcome.
  • Assistance with luggage can be provided.
  • Checking in/out times can be flexible with prior notice. Please discuss

    at booking process.

  • Mobile phone networks are all available, Vodafone is best.
  • Fire alarms are audible only, however owners do recognise that some

    people may have specific requirements and advise guests to discuss this at the earliest convenience to ensure that mutually satisfactory procedures are put in place in the event of an emergency.
